Located in the Lower Garden District, the project has a rich history that includes more than 150 years of commercial activity centered on the prosperous seaport and adjacent cotton industry. The comprehensive renovation was of the three story Lykes Steamship Building constructed in 1949 and the Cotton Press Building circa 1890 into a 52-unit apartment complex, commercial kitchen, and commercial tenant space. The revitalization emerged and retained the original historic charm and integrity, while reflecting the new contemporary and efficient building practices. The ingenuity and purposeful design of this “community like” project, has also been a contributing factor to reinvigorating this section of the city. In addition, Williams Architects has spent decades cultivating trust with regulatory agencies from departments in City Hall to the State Fire Marshal and National Park Service. This access and experience were instrumental in the owner obtaining State and Federal Historic Tax Credits to finance the project.
